ABSTRACT

Based on our fieldwork with Rio de Janeiro favela activists and social movements, this paper looks into how Black female activists, during the COVID-19 pandemic, engaged with multimodal resources and practical sociolinguistic imaginations that yielded forms of agency within an unequal social matrix. While engaging with a critique of the liberal model of agency as the triumph of individual autonomy, this paper ethnographically looks to modes of agency that unfold at the online-offline nexus as a capacity to act that emerges from pain and suffering, within limits of the language that wounds, and in the context of surviving capitalist inequities. This modality of agency becomes visible in the mourning movement for Marielle Franco, a Black favela councilwoman brutally murdered in 2018. Ethnographically, we discuss the Afrodiasporic agency of mourners as ‘watering Marielle's seeds', that is, as expanding Marielle's sociolinguistic imaginations of language diversity, access to semiotic resources, and Black Atlantic cooperation. ABSTRACT

Both enterprises and their employees have globally experienced remote work at an unprecedented scale since the outbreak of COVID-19. As the pandemic becomes less of a threat, some companies have called their employees back to a physical office, citing issues related to working remotely, but many employees have refused to return. Thus, working in the metaverse has gained much attention as an alternative that could complement the weaknesses of completely remote work or even offline work. However, we do not know yet what benefits and drawbacks the metaverse has as a legitimate workspace, because there are few real cases of 1) working in the metaverse and 2) working remotely at such an unprecedented scale. Thus, this paper aims to identify real challenges and opportunities the metaverse workspace presents when compared to remote work by conducting semi-structured interviews and participatory workshops with various employees and company stakeholders (e.g., HR managers and CEOs) who have experienced at least two of three work types: working in a physical office, remotely, or in the metaverse. Consequently, we identified 1) advantages and disadvantages of remote work and 2) opportunities and challenges of the metaverse. We further discuss design implications that may overcome the identified challenges of working in the metaverse. © 2023 Owner/Author.

ABSTRACT

The application and effects of the project-based learning (PBL) model have been carried out in various majors and courses, and the results analysed in several studies. This study was focused on the Covid-19 pandemic period from 2020 to 2022 to discuss lessons and effects of applying an on-line and off-line PBL model to engineering economics courses for engineering students in 2021 and 2022 compared with a simple on-line course in 2020 without PBL. Project teams consisting of three-four students carried out on-line collaborative learning to solve open-ended problems through a four-step PBL procedure including presentation of the final result. Except for this PBL application in 2021 and 2022, textbooks, lecture contents, assignments and tests were implemented in the same way for each semester over these three years. Through lecture evaluation and a simple survey for students, the semesters with PBL showed higher effects in inducing student-led learning and lecture satisfaction compared to the semesters without it. Further, it was established that the PBL application to the course and the evaluation method were more appropriate than the approach in other semesters. It is expected that the PBL method and operation procedure outlined in this article could be utilised as a best practice for various on-line and mixed courses in student-led collaborative learning activities to achieve better educational effects and satisfaction. © WIETE 2023.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic situation is affected in various ways in the education domain. The sudden transformation from offline to online teaching-learning process made students and teachers use different tools like WhatsApp for communication. The reason for this consideration is to investigate the impacts of WhatsApp utilized for instruction and decide the suppositions of understudies towards the method. The study is designed, keeping in mind the current COVID-19 situation and how it affected the education system turning it into online mode. On different questionnaires, regression and heatmap analysis is performed. The investigation showed that both learning situations have diverse impacts on the victory of understudies while supporting the conventional environment by utilizing WhatsApp is more successful for the increment of victory. The assessment moreover showed that students had superior pleasant reviews closer to the usage of WhatsApp in their courses. They requested the same workout in their one-of-a-kind courses as well. They expressed that picking up information can moreover take out unwittingly and the messages with pics were more prominent and viable for their picking up information. Be that as it may, some college understudies have communicated harming audits approximately the timing of a few posts and the repetitive posts within the bunch. At long last, it is supported that the utilization of WhatsApp within the preparing framework is to be energized as a steady innovation. . © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

This paper aimed to show how much Self-efficacy and Achievement Motivation contribute to the formation of SPIRIT character for the students in the post-covid-19 pandemic era when the education process is still ongoing with a combined method of online and offline learning. This research used quantitative methods and literature studies. The results of this research showed that self-efficacy and achievement motivation had not significance contribution to the SPIRIT characters building for the students. The other variables that are not discussed even have a much larger contribution. So it is interested to investigate this result. Even so, it does not mean that students do not need to pay attention to self-efficacy and achievement motivation, because even though they are small, they still need to be owned, so that the SPIRIT characters can be further developed in the post-covid-19 pandemic era. © 2022 ACM.

ABSTRACT

Art-of-living allows individuals to live a contemplative, mindful, and active life to attain well-being. This study demonstrates the development and implementation of an art-of-living training intervention to nurture positivity among Pakistan's university students during COVID-19. To ensure the efficacy of teaching and learning during the second wave of the pandemic, the intervention was imparted through a blended learning approach comprising two modes: (1) online learning and (2) offline personal and collaborative learning. This approach was based on the emotionalized learning experiences (ELE) format to make learning more engaging, permanent, and gratifying. The study comprised 243 students randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 122) and a wait-list control group (n = 121). Growth curve analysis indicated that positivity together with the components of art-of-living-self-efficacy, savoring, social contacts, physical care, and meaning-and overall art-of-living increased at a greater rate in the experimental group than in the control group from pretest to posttest and from posttest to follow-up measurement. The analysis provided an all-encompassing view of how positivity developed in the two groups over time. There were significant variations in participants' initial status (intercepts) and growth trajectories (slopes). The influence of participants' initial positivity scores suggested that students with high initial positivity scores had a slower increase in linear growth, whereas those with low initial positivity scores had a faster increase in linear growth over time. The success of the intervention may be attributed to the dimensions of ELE-embodied in the two modes-and fidelity to intervention for effectively implementing the blended learning approach. ABSTRACT

The mega-scale online education conducted nationwide during the COVID-19 epidemic has enabled online learning to move from individualized participation to full participation, practicing and advancing the development of wisdom education to a large extent. In the post-epidemic era, a new educational order that integrates online and offline learning is gradually taking shape, and online learning has become a new norm from emergency. The popularization and promotion of online education has been the general trend. The "double reduction"policy has led to a trust dilemma, a communication dilemma, a cooperation dilemma and an organizational dilemma in the practice of home-school-society collaborative parenting, and an unprecedented challenge for school education and teachers teaching. This study proposes an intelligent operating system based on big data and adaptive learning traction model, rooted in rich pedagogical theories, to solve the above-mentioned challenges in online education by virtue of "wisdom". © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected education in Indonesia. The government has suggested alternatives to solve the learning problems during the pandemic. Offline and online classes were used to fulfil the various learning needs of students. This study investigated the effect of using augmented reality-assisted media in offline and online classes on student achievement amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This study used a quasi-experimental design by utilising augmented reality (AR) in each class for eight weeks. Validated test questions were used fol-lowing the use of AR. According to the results of the independent t-test in the current study, student achievement from offline (n = 63, M = 74.71) and online (n = 64, M= 71.46) classes increased drastically with t = 1.994, p = 0.048. However, in terms of differences in achievement improvement between the two classes, students in of-fline classes had higher achievement compared to those in online classes. Thus, it can be concluded that student achievement in Physics has improved with the help of augmented reality-assisted media amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly through offline learning mode. This study contributes to the development of AR for future education, particularly how to enhance student achievement in Physics. Future AR studies can be carried out in more classes from various regions or countries, considering that the 3D models in AR are useful to aid the learning of other subjects with concepts. © 2023 Science Education Study Program FMIPA UNNES Semarang.

ABSTRACT

From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany, different groups have been protesting measures implemented by different government bodies in Germany to control the pandemic. It was widely claimed that many of the offline and online protests were driven by conspiracy narratives disseminated through groups and channels on the messenger app Telegram. We investigate this claim by measuring the frequency of conspiracy narratives in messages from open Telegram chat groups of the Querdenken movement, set up to organize protests against COVID-19 restrictions in Germany. We furthermore explore the content of these messages using topic modelling. To this end, we collected 822k text messages sent between April 2020 and May 2022 in 34 chat groups. By fine-tuning a Distilbert model, using self-annotated data, we find that 8.24% of the sent messages contain signs of conspiracy narratives. This number is not static, however, as the share of conspiracy messages grew while the overall number of messages shows a downward trend since its peak at the end of 2020. We further find a mix of known conspiracy narratives make up the topics in our topic model. Our findings suggest that the Querdenken movement is getting smaller over time, but its remaining members focus even more on conspiracy narratives. © 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics.

ABSTRACT

The progress of educational technology and the demand of home learning under COVID‐19 have promoted the rapid development of online learning all over the world. The existing research focuses on offline learning or online learning but seldom discusses their switching process. This paper uses the questionnaire method and structural equation model to analyze the influencing factors of switching intention and behavior from offline learning to online learning. The results show that the switching intention is significantly affected by perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and computer self‐efficacy, and negatively affected by the perceived risk. The switching intention makes a significant positive effect on switching behavior. When the learner's offline learning relationship inertia and satisfaction are higher, the relationship between switching intention and switching behavior will be weakened. At the end of the paper, some suggestions are put forward for reference for the related parties of online learning.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has unprece-dentedly influenced social interactions, which can be implemented both in real life (offline) and on the Internet. Prosocial behavior as a type of social interactions has a positive impact on individuals and society, especially during crises. Prosocial behavior is determined by various factors, including individual values and contextu-al factors as the most influential ones. The form of prosocial behavior and its deter-minants may differ in different periods of the society functioning. Therefore, study-ing prosocial behavior before and during the pandemic, and identifying factors of its implementation in various contexts is a relevant task. This study explores the relationship between individual values and prosocial behavior, in an offline and an online context, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Russia. A cross-sectional study with two sub-samples - the "pre-pandemic" group (N=304) and the "pandemic" group (N=187) - was conducted online, using the short version of Human Values Scale by S. Schwartz (ESS-21) and scales of prosocial behavior in online and offline contexts. Results show that during a pandemic people are less likely to engage in prosocial behavior offline and rely less on Self-Trans -cendence values. At the same time, in "the pre-pandemic" group, Self-Transcendence values contribute to prosocial behavior in both contexts, while Self-Enhancement values contribute to prosocial behavior in the online context. Next, in the "pandem-ic" group, Self-Transcendence values and Openness-to-Change values promote prosocial behavior in both contexts, while Conservation values discourage it. The results are discussed regarding the impact a pandemic has on people's lives.

ABSTRACT

The Assessment Center (AC) Method has been widely used as one of the evaluation methods for selecting, promoting, and developing leaders in a company. In Indonesia, AC has also been used for selecting the Board of Directors, especially in State-Owned Enterprises (Peraturan Menteri BUMN, 2021). In the digital era, the demand for a fast and flexible assessment center increased and became essential for selecting the right candidate as evidenced by a 57-percent rise of the Assessment Center project from 2017 to 2021. In response to COVID-19 pandemic as well as to cope with the increasing demand, Assessment Center Indonesia (ACI), by Telkom Indonesia, has been developing a Virtual Assessment Center (VAC) which has been implemented for AC in Telkom since the middle of 2020. The current study was conducted as an effort to examine its effectiveness. ACI tested the effectiveness of Virtual Assessment Center (VAC) using the effectiveness framework that measures: 1) ease of use, 2) perceived usefulness, and 3) the consistency of virtual and offline AC results. The first and second aspect of effectiveness indicators were collected by using questionnaires and was analyzed using descriptive statistics. As for testing the consistency of virtual and offline AC result, the ratings of nine competencies from 32 employees who took offline and virtual AC in 2021-2022 were gathered and were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The result showed that participants' perceived ease of use in the Virtual AC group is slightly higher than the offline method. As for the human capital users' usefulness, it was confirmed that the Virtual AC was perceived as more effective than offline methods. Moreover, from the Virtual AC administrator's perspective, they agreed that the Virtual AC supported the flexibility of time, place, and number of participants. In addition, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test also validated that there were no significant differences between the pairs' rating of nine competencies measured by either offline or virtual methods (p> 0.05). The results from the three perspectives above showed that Virtual AC can be regarded as an effective replacement of the offline assessment. Further analysis is still needed to compare the validity of offline versus virtual AC. Practical implications also provided in the research paper. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

PurposeDrawing on dynamic capability theory, this study investigates how online–offline channel integration (OOCI) affects a firm's supply chain resilience and how such an effect is moderated by market turbulence and regulatory uncertainty.Design/methodology/approachA sample of 273 Chinese firms that conduct online and offline business and hierarchical regression analysis were used to examine the research model.FindingsThe results suggest that the effect of OOCI on supply chain resilience differs in terms of its dimensions (i.e. information integration, transaction integration and service integration). While information integration and service integration were positively associated with supply chain resilience, transaction integration had a non-significant relationship with supply chain resilience. Moreover, market turbulence negatively moderated the effect of transaction integration and positively moderated the effect of service integration. Regulatory uncertainty positively moderated the effect of transaction integration and negatively moderated the effect of service integration. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.Originality/valueThis study examines the effect of OOCI on supply chain resilience. It further explores the influence of market turbulence and regulatory uncertainty on the relationship between OOCI and supply chain resilience.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the case of a shopping mall in Seoul, South Korea, based on its offline retail sales data during the period of the enforcement of the COVID-19 pandemic social distancing policy. South Korea implemented strict social distancing, especially in retail categories where people eat out, due to the danger of spreading infectious disease. A total of 55 retail shops' sales data were analyzed and classified into five categories: fashion, food and beverage (f&b), entertainment, cosmetics and sport. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and exponential smoothing (ETS) models were employed, and the autocorrelation (ACF) and partial autocorrelation (PACF) of each retail category's sales data were analyzed. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was used to determine the most suitable forecasting model for each retail category. In this way, the f&b and entertainment retail categories, in which people eat out, were found to have been significantly impacted, with their 2022 sales forecasted to be less than 80% of their 2018 and 2019 sales. The fashion retail category was also significantly impacted, slowly recovering sales in 2022. The cosmetics and sport retail categories were little impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak, with their retail sales having already recovered by 2022. © 2023 by the authors.
